Boosting Your Awareness

You need to know what is happening around you when you are in public. This is true whether you are walking in a mall or walking in a parking lot. If you understand your environment you can stay safe. Here are some ways to be more aware of your surroundings and stay safe in public.

Observing Your Environment

Every place is different. When you go to a place take a moment to look around. See if there is anything that seems strange. For example are there people standing near your car? Do the people near you seem upset or angry?
It is good to know what a place is usually like. Get to know what it is like at places you go to a lot, like coffee shops or stores. This helps you know when something is not right. Ask yourself some questions: Who else's here? What is the mood like? Do I feel comfortable here?
If you always look at your surroundings you can see problems before they happen. This helps keep you safe.

Trusting Your Instincts

When you get better at observing pay attention to how you feel. If something seems wrong or you feel tense trust your feelings. Do something. You can go into a store if you feel weird about someone.
Act confident by looking people in the eye and standing up straight. This shows that you are sure of yourself and might stop people from bothering you. If you start to feel anxious take a breath and look around again. Staying calm helps you make choices and be more aware of your surroundings.

Navigating Situations

If someone is being confrontational how you respond is important. If someone is upset try to listen to them. Say something like "I see that you are upset lets talk about this in a way."
It is also good to know how to get out of a situation. Know the layout of places you go to a lot and find the emergency exits. This way you can get out quickly if you need to.

Be Prepared

It is good to be prepared when you go out. Know the area you are in and where the emergency exits are. Know who to call if you need help. This makes you feel more in control.
Make a plan for your safety. Make sure your phone is charged and you can get to it easily. If you are going alone tell a friend or family member where you are going and what you are doing. This helps keep you safe and aware of your surroundings.

Know the Self-Defense Laws

You need to know the self-defense laws where you live. These laws are different in places and they tell you what you can do if someone is threatening you.
In some places you can defend yourself if you are in danger. In places you have to try to calm the situation down first. You can take self-defense classes to learn more about how to handle situations. You can also ask the police about the laws in your area.

Cultivating an Attitude

Being aware of your surroundings should not make you anxious all the time. It should make you feel prepared. If you have a plan and know what to do you can feel safe.
If you are prepared you can feel more confident. Remember, situational awareness is not about keeping yourself safe it is about making the community a safer place. Always think about your safety. Be aware of your surroundings.

By doing these things you can be more aware of your surroundings stay safe and make the world a safer place. Always pay attention to what's happening around you and be intentional about your situational awareness. Situational awareness is important, for your safety.
